Afro-Latinx Module - Global Awareness
"Afro-Latino or the just as frequently used gender-neutral term, Afro-Latinx refers to those of African descent from Latin America and the Caribbean. However, these terms are no longer widely used in Latin-America and instead refer to Afro-Latinos living in America. (Retrieved on 2/24/2021 from https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17442220903331662) Black Latinos are and have been essential to the development of culture in both America and Latin America. For example, it was Africans who were believed to form a relationship between language and music. Music genres such as salsa, cumbia, and merengue all took inspiration from the African drums played by Afro-Latinos. Afro-Latinx people also created Reggaeton and Latin dances such as Palo, Bomba, and Samba. Afro-Latinos influenced culture in the U.S as well. Their rhythms inspired genres such as jazz and R&B, and they’re responsible for the creation of hip hop in the 70s and 80s. Now, we can buy it in grocery stores and even buy Horchata Frappuccinos from Starbucks. I believe that Afro-Latino culture is collectivistic, as most African and Latin American cultures tend to be. I say this because Afro-Latinos were and still are a minority that is heavily discredited and discriminated against. For a long time in the U.S, the idea that someone could be black and Latino was confusing and often misunderstood, which is why many people that now identify as Afro-Latino are proud of their heritage and their community. It is helpful for me personally to become more familiar with other cultures because it may help me get a better understanding of people I know or may meet in the future. It can help me understand why people may do or approach certain things differently than I do. It establishes that there is more than one way of thinking and that no one way is better than the other. Learning about different cultures can also help dispel negative stereotypes, which are unfair to the people forced to live with them. Overall, being informed about other cultures isn’t just respectful but can give me a sense of awareness I wouldn’t otherwise have."

Name of Assignment: Culture Module
Subject: Sociology
Facilitator/Teacher: Jaqueline Perry
Description of Work/Assignment: This forum for my sociology class at the college required me to research a culture other than my own. I then had to write about my findings and demonstrate to my peers what I had learned.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addresses global awareness skills because I had to research the history and motivations of another culture. Through this forum, I got a glimpse of what life for Afro-Latinx people is like.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my writing. I like my writing style in this forum, and my professor did as well!
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved my global awareness skills with this assignment because I learned about a new culture that has contributed largely to ours here in America.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most challenging part of this assignment was choosing which culture to research. There are so many cultures out there that I was just as clueless about; however, I decided to research the Afro-Latino culture, and I'm happy I did.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different?
I don't think I would change anything about this work. I am proud of my writing, and I got some very nice compliments from my professor.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This assignment relates to what I have learned in the past because I've researched other cultures very similarly for other school projects.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I can apply this to future learning when I meet people of different cultures! From this forum, I learned that there are many ways of thinking and that these can vary based on factors like culture. Being informed is the best way to stay respectful of other's ideas.
