Communication Skills - Participating in class discussion boards
What are discussion boards?
Dr.Nani, my psych professor, will assign a discussion board every week to expand on a topic from that week's chapter. We write 150 words of information we found interesting from the textbook, then reply to other's posts. The example I have below was written with information from chapter three of our textbook: The Biological perspective.

The Right Brain:
I found this topic to be interesting because I, in the past, have heard things like “I’m messy and creative because I am a right-brained person.”, or precisely the opposite, “I do so well in school because I am a left-brained person.” I have even personally been told by a friend that I am "so right-brained." Reading chapter three, I found that there may be some truth behind these words. Although postulations differ, they all tend to allude to the fact that people can rely on one hemisphere of the brain over the other. It does seem that people who are “right-brained” are more creative and may pursue a career in the arts. However, there are theories out there that do not give quite as much credit to one hemisphere of the brain when it comes to our personalities. There is evidence that suggests that the two hemispheres are designed to handle different situations, but only to a modest extent, meaning that we likely use both hemispheres in all situations. I find it fascinating that there could be some truth to the “right-brained” description.
Reflection:
I feel this assignment most represents Communication Skills . Posting and replying in discussion boards is a great form of non-verbal communication that I've never practiced at Kihei Charter before.
I am proud of this discussion board post, and all of my others as well, because I usually get a note from my teacher in the grade book saying she likes the way I write or the way I express my ideas.
As previously stated, I have never utilized this much non-verbal communication in a class before. The only other instance I can think of in which I have previously used non-verbal communication is sending the occasional email to a teacher. Now, I'm bonding with my peers entirely online.
The most difficult part about completing these weekly tasks are getting them done efficiently before the deadline. Discussion board posts are due every Friday by 5pm, and initially it was difficult to remember that there is a deadline. I've been able to solve this by creating a mini white board every week and writing a list of all of my assignments, and their due dates.
If I were given a redo of this assignment, I would have tried to start it earlier. I had plenty of time, but I feel if I weren't rushing myself I could've articulated some of my thoughts a bit better.
This assignment reminds me of marking the text, another weekly assignment I had to do in my eighth grade science class. We'd have to highlight what we thought was important and write comments and questions about the text in the side lines. These discussion boards remind me of marking the text because they are both ways to further absorb and remember the information you've read.
I can apply this to future learning when sending emails. Due to the semi-formal tone I need to take on when writing to teachers, I was always unsure of how to phrase things without sounding too formal or too casual. These weekly discussion boards have been helping me figure that out, and also helping me get over my nerves when emailing teachers to ask for help.
Communication Skills: The ability to effectively communicate with peers, teachers, strangers, etc. using various forms of communication such as oral, written, or non-verbal.
