Princess Ka'iulani: Rewriting Hawaiian History
For this assignment, we were supposed to write about the story of Princess Ka'iulani. We were supposed to explain, in our opinion, what would have happened/how history would have been impacted had Hawaii not been annexed, and princess Ka'iulani had not passed away when she did. I really liked this project, because I'm actually a huge fan of history class. I really like learning about what happened/who lived before me. This assignment also incorporated one of my favorite things to do, writing!

Which 21st Century Skills do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I feel this assignment addresses the global awareness 21st century skill. I say this, because in my paper I feel I demonstrate an understanding of the thinking/motivations of different cultures. I understand why Princess Ka'iulani wanted to prevent Hawaii from annexation, and I know the motives behind businessmen wanting Hawaiian territory. I feel I learned a lot from this paper, and I'm really enjoying my Hawaiian Studies class!
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
In this assignment, I am most proud of my writing. I felt this paper was well written, and though it may not be my best written work, I love the style in which I wrote the paper. I felt I did Princess Ka'iulani's story some justice!
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment?
I improved my global awareness skills with this assignment, because I had to learn the reasoning behind people's past actions. Through learning things like those, it can teach people how to respond if something like this were to happen in the future.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part of this project was trying to imagine what life in Hawaii would have been like if it had not been annexed, and Princess Ka'iulani hadn't died when she did. With normal research papers like these, I've never had to answer "what if" questions. I feel like this assignment really pushed me to think outside of the box to meet the assignment expectations, and it definitely wasn't a bad thing.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different?
In this work, I feel like I could improve my prediction of what could have been. I got a 100% on the assignment, but I felt like my prediction portion of the paper was a bit vague. If I could redo the paper, I definitely would have tried to add more detail to my prediction.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
Throughout Hawaiian Studies, we've been learning about the annexation of Hawaii. This paper was only a very small portion of what we've been studying, so I was able to put my knowledge of sugar businessmen from last quarter to good use.
How can you apply this to future learning?
This project really made me think about these events and princess ka'iulani's life in a different perspective. It made me imagine what could have happened in the future, and from now on I think that's an important factor to include/consider in papers and assignments.
